Liverwort is a very old, primitive plant favouring damp conditions, as does moss which can hold a lot of water.

There are few flowers blooming in the woodland but fruiting Fungi are still in evidence.

The Velvet Shank, covered in a mucus substance favours cooler conditions and is frost resistant.

 

Jelly Ear Fungus (Auricularia auricula-judae) growing on an Elder branch with the yellow lichen Xanthoria parietina . The liverwort is probably Great Scented Liverwort (Conocephalum conicum) which my reference book tells me is “strongly aromatic” but not what it actually smells of…one to test I think. [Martin]
